Keys' Response to Shayler Withdrawal - Could Lead to Tatton Scenario
KEYS FOR SEDGEFIELD CAMPAIGN
PRESS INFORMATION - IMMEDIATE
On hearing that David Shayler has pulled out of the race against Blair in his favour, Reg Keys said:
'I express my gratitude to David Shayler for his cooperation and his endorsement of me as the strongest candidate to oppose Blair. This means we are well on the way to a Tatton scenario where the other candidates stood aside so Martin Bell could defeat an unpopular and discredited incumbent.
'If this leads to a 'world Portillo moment' as David says, then even better. I therefore urge the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats to pull out too.
'I am standing in Sedgefield in order to demand accountability from Blair for an illegal and immoral war in which tens of thousands died - a war for which he had no mandate, neither legal nor democratic.
'The Iraq issue will not go away - such a catastrophic political blunder cannot merely be put to one side. If the other candidates withdraw, the people of Sedgefield can topple Blair on their own behalf and on behalf of all those who have suffered in this illegal war.'
Martin Bell said:
'I believe there is a real possibility here for a Tatton style insurrection of the people against politics-as-usual. I too urge the Conservative and Liberal Democrat parties to withdraw their candidates.'
