Wed 6 April
Day 1 of the Keys for Sedgefield campaign with the first street leafleting
and the first press conference.
In Newton Aycliffe town centre in the space of an hour, we met, among many
others, one woman who like Reg had lost her son in Iraq and a man who had
been a reluctant human shield in the first Gulf War.
People seem to be up for the idea that they, personally, can get rid of an
unpopular and absentee local MP and at the same time change the nature of
the next Labour government. And, of course, affect the geopolitical climate.
The press conference went off if not with a bang then at least a lot of
flashes. Bob Clay introduced Reg and made clear that we're running a serious
and professional campaign and aim to win. Martin Bell said from his
experiences as an independent MP that what is needed for success is a good
candidate, a good cause and an unpopular and discredited sitting MP. In this
campaign we clearly have all three.
Musician Brian Eno said that he'd observed the deliberate dismemberment of
democracy, led by the prime minister himself, and that this campaign will
give the people of Sedgefield the chance to reverse that process.
