Day 2 - the Newsnight helicopter lands! It's quite fun being followed around
by a friendly helicopter, though the shadow of war is never far from our
minds and we're well aware that most helicopters are not quite so friendly.
This campaign is about a war, about an unnecessary, illegal and vicious war.
As Reg says, all war is ugly and he will not shy away from talking about the
realities of Iraq, though Blair himself would like shrug it off and 'move
on'.
The Newsnight item showed Reg as the only candidate actually up and running
- where were the others? Poor Michael Crick had to be content with agents
and spokespeople for the main parties, and Blair's agent John Burton rather
gave the game away when he said the campaign is often better off without the
candidate present. In his case this is clearly true, but in ours Reg is a
distinct advantage.
I suppose Sedgefield Labour Party is the only one which actually does have
to have a picture of the prime minister on its leaflets - something which
most other Labour candidates have decided is a disadvantage, and many Lib
Dems and Tories are actually delighted to use themselves.
Superb article by Margaret Cook about Reg and his candidacy in the Mail:
'WHY I SALUTE THIS HERO - and urge every woman in Britain to do their bit to
bring down Tony Blair'. Margaret, if you're reading this, please get in
touch and come and visit us.
